Winter’s Solstice on the Yarra
On winter’s solstice, the river flows,
placid and tranquil the Yarra glitters and glows.
A Wurundjeri’s tune, soft and low, melancholic,
the ancestors’ wisdom echoes.
The river promised nuggets, but gold was brief—
now it bears the weight of time’s belief.
Diggers left and some returned,
Stony river banks n’ver left unturned.
From sediment rocks, foundations rose,
walls and fireplaces, cairns and abodes,
built by hands under Warrandyte skies,
Testaments of resilience the floods couldn’t erode.
By Pound Bend’s curve a tunnel named,
Through layers of boulders, man’s labour proclaimed,
but nature’s true course cannot be tamed—
shortcut carved, yet the water made no abide,
along meandering paths, emotions astride.
Past Heidelberg, Fitzroy and Richmond the Yarra weaves,
cloaking pastures and woodlands green,
When the river kisses the sea,
at dusk, glass towers beam,
glistening gowns in the solstice gleam.
As night falls, in the year‘s longest sleep,
Gentle whispers the river keeps.
Pound Bend
Richmond,
