27062025 On the first day of winter by Ann for A.S.

     1 June 2025

Painting by Nick Dridan, displayed at Maryborough Art Gallery

On winter’s first breath, you led the way,

Ushering sojourner through the tapestry of this terrain,

Arid and vast,

whispers of epochs past,

Known to the First Nations people through stories ancestors told,

of fire's embrace and golden lava seethed long ago.

On winter's first breath, you led the way,

Passing parched plains where earth-toned sheep roamed and cattle lay,

Ascending Mount Franklin's lush incline,

Spring water the tarmac rinsed, tyres cleansed,

Beneath dense conifers Mother Nature echoes her consent,

to  trespassing and our exclaim.

On winter's first breath, you and I tread the same pace,

down the crater beams the setting rays,

through pine needles, shafts of warm light cast,

moistening the bowl with glee,

Misty vails of smoke and past rites…

Campfire dies, smoldering embers sizzle in the breeze.

My arm in yours,

Our journey finds roots in hallowed traces.

On this first day of winter,

down the serene cradle of Mount  Franklin,

Wish I may, wish I might,

for here my dreams be scattered a resting place.
